The channel which connects Wells to the sea dwindles to a trickle at low tide. The division of the picture between land and sky corresponds to the 'Golden Mean' which was used as an aesthetic proportion by the Greeks, and even the Egyptians before them. The seabirds give a touch of life, and the hills in the distance give the peaceful scene some depth. The subdued colours complement each other ideally.
